Screwcaps now account for almost a third of the total global bottled still wine market, according to new data.

Six year ago the market share of the aluminum closures in Europe alone was around a quarter (26%), but by 2016 this proportion had risen to nearly 30% (29.6%) according to Euromonitor.

“These reports show that aluminum closures are continuing to show strong advantages over other wine closure types,” said Guido Aufdemkamp, executive director of the Aluminum Closures Group.  "Their convenience and increasingly strong branding and decoration enhancements mean more and more winemakers are turning to aluminum closures.”

The screwcap market represents around 9bn units annually, out of 30bn bottles of wine sold worldwide in 2016, according to the company. The US has been the key driver of global growth,  where screwcaps accounted for almost 45% of all bottled wine sales in 2015. There have also been big increases in Germany, the UK, France and the Netherlands.

"There is a truly global acceptance of aluminum closures, particularly with younger consumers and those new to wine, who show a real preference for screwcaps,” claimed Aufdemkamp.

The Aluminum Closure Group represents the interests of major manufacturers of aluminum closures, strip and sheets for closures, or 75% of global production.
